What prompted me to post about the topic of dehydration is that fact that way too many Americans are walking around dehydrated, not realizing how it affects them.

Did you know that we are more dehydrated in the winter than in the summer?
It's true! We seem to forget to drink when we are cold vs when we are hot and sweating in heat.

More recently my husband who is a mountain bike instructor for the Police department had a few students drop out and one was rushed to the emergency room due to dehydration and heat related illnesses.
(no worries, the hubby is trained to recognize it and to act on it quickly, the students are all well)

Here are a few signs that you may be dehydrated

Urinate (pee) less
Urine is dark yellow/brown and may smell bad

Skin changes:
Dry/hot or cold/clammy
Reddish or yellowish in color

Cracked lips
Dry mouth

Sunken or dry eyes (no tears)
Dizzy and lightheaded – may fall down Weak

Not interested in doing anything
Sleepy and tired

Hard to wake up

I myself have experienced dehydration without realizing it.
Sometimes its only when I am properly hydrated and I feel better that I realize I was dehydrated to begin with.

DANGER!!!
Most problems can be avoided if you recognize and treat dehydration early.
However, if it is not treated promptly, it can result in seizures, brain damage, shock or even death.

How to prevent dehydration:
Drink water!
The Institute of Medicine recommends men to drink roughly 3 liters of water and women to drink about 2.2 liters. It's important to be well hydrated, however you should not need to force water.
I carry a measured water bottle with my every where I go. This way I am sipping on fluids through out the day and I can keep track of how many ounces/bottles I drink.
Drinking CLEAN water is important because there is typically high levels of lead and other heavy metals in typical tap water and most filtered systems or bottled waters.
Get Clean® Water is a revolutionary water filtration pitcher system certified by the Water Quality Association (WQA) to reduce up to 99% of lead —as well as dozens of other nasty contaminants that can turn up in your water and may be harmful to your health.

    • Avoid Alcohol & Caffeine
      (this includes sodas)
      Drink water instead.

    •  Reduce Physical Activity
    • When its very hot outside, cut back on activities and stay in the shade.
Sweating can cause dehydration more quickly.

    •  Avoid exposure to extreme heat and/or humidity
       Limit or eliminate outside activities,
including trips in extreme weather conditions.

*You will be surprised to find that 30 minutes outside is just enough for kids to get enough activity for the day when it is extremely hot.

    •  Catch it Early.
Look for the signs of dehydration (noted above) and act before it worsens.

    •   *If you suspect a person is becoming dehydrated, give them water to sip right away.

Now, I know that if I feel tired, light headed, dizzy, get cramps, feel thirsty,
to reach for water before I do anything else, because chances are I may be dehydrated.

Between Hockey, playing outside, the pool and just being busy & active, we literally drink "gallons" of water in our house.
